K. Flay @ the Van Buren

Everyone is striving to find their next big break or success story. Yet, the sheer disbelief that the Punk Pack would be booking larger and more popular artists within the greater music scene makes that progress seem impossible until it is. This was our experience covering K.Flay with Vienna Vienna; getting the opportunity to support our contemporary earworms. The disbelief in this case was hearing back from both artists, one after the other.

Vienna Vienna has been a growing earworm for the Pack with “God Save the Queens” and “Vienna (Everything’s Fine)” that have stuck with us the longest. Yet, experiencing them live is just as enchanting as their recorded sound has lead us to believe. Vienna's sound only hits harder in person as well as comes through clean. It became a delight to meet Vienna's bassist and be able to share first hand how their unashamedly queer celebration has touched us and many of our friends. The Punk Pack encourages you to check him out and listen to sweetly defiant sound of Vienna Vienna.

Hearing the crowd scream as the house lights dimmed made our hearts race knowing who the Pack was about to see, K.Flay. The Punk Pack first introduction to Flay has been due to her many collaborations with other artists such as the Arkells, Grandson, Pierce the Veil, Tom Morello, an X Ambassadors. What the Pack identify with the strongest is K.Flay's reoccurring theme of shameless personal expression. As she was playing some our favorite songs, the Punk Pack felt grounded during K.Flay's set. Songs such as “Weirdo,” “Zen," or “Irish Goodbye” resound as personal anthems. We can confirm that K.Flay's intended mission to have the audience leaving strong, energized, inspired, and powerful. Another pleasant surprise was hearing a cover of “I Am The Walrus” of Beatles fame. We’re excited to hear that K.Flay's latest album I'm Making Friends With The Silence is a softer re-release of songs from her Album Mono; accommodating and reflecting upon K.Flay's hearing loss in her right ear. The Punk Pack are excited to see what K.Flay brings next as she continues her journey with her music.

As the Punk Pack left the show, our bodies were still vibrating from both artists. The Van Buren has been growing on us with each show. Between the reasonable seating accommodations and the intimacy of the venue, Each show thus far has been an amazing experience. Thank you both to Vienna Vienna and K.Flay for allowing us the opportunity to cover you. The Pack excitedly wait for your next shows.
